Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. Her aunt was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious by her mother. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her the college. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of the home of a juror. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was assigned she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
