Rachel Emily Nichols was born in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Alison and James Nichols, a schoolteacher. She is of French Canadian and English descent. Cony High School was her high school in Augusta. She graduated with a diploma in math as well as a competitive high jump. Columbia University in New York City was where she graduated with an honors degree in math and economics. She began modeling and began a successful modeling career, with prominent brands like Guess?, Abercrombie & Fitch or L'Oreal.
